About Us
Homewatch CareGivers was founded in 1980 in Denver, Colorado by Paul Sauer. The company has grown to include over 150 different locations on four continents. The Utah office was opened by Sanford Barrett and Kevin Whatcott and provides the same high-quality service that clients throughout the world have come to expect.
SANFORD BARRETT was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He graduated
from West High School. After high school, Sanford spent two years in
England doing missionary work for his church. Upon returning to Utah,
Sanford attended the University of Utah and graduated with a bachelor’s
degree in political science. He then worked for the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation until returning to the University of Utah to obtain a law
degree in 1993. Sanford’s law practice focused on consumer issues,
primarily in bankruptcy, but also touching on landlord tenant, fair
debt collection, fair credit reporting and other consumer related areas
of law. As an attorney, Sanford has seen first hand the challenges
seniors and their families face. After practicing law for more than ten
years, Sanford decided that the adversarial nature of the legal system
limited his ability to give service to others. Sanford also had
experienced the decline and passing of his mother due to Lou Gehrig’s
disease. He was impressed and moved by the dedication and compassion of
care givers who assisted her and allowed her to stay in her home and
maintain her quality of life during this difficult time. Upon leaving
his law practice Sanford co-founded Homewatch CargeGivers of Utah. He
is married to and has three children, the youngest of which he and his
wife recently adopted from China. He and his family live in Salt Lake
City, Utah.
KEVIN WHATCOTT was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He
graduated from West High School in 1980 and then served a two-year
mission for his church in New England. After attending the University
of Utah, he graduated with honors in 1988 with a degree in political
science, a minor in economics and a Certificate in Public
Administration. He received his law degree from Boston University in
1991. Kevin is admitted to practice law in Utah and Colorado. His law
practice has focused on consumer bankruptcy, but he has also practiced
in the areas of insurance litigation, criminal defense, collections and
domestic law. In 1993, he co-founded the law firm of Whatcott, Barrett
& Hagen, a law firm that specializes in helping poor and
disadvantaged clients as they work to regain control of their finances.
The firm grew to be the largest consumer bankruptcy practice in the
state of Utah. Over the past several years, Kevin has taken on a more
active role as a caregiver for his parents. He has trained to assist
his mother, who has renal failure, with home dialysis. And he provides
general care and assistance to his father, who has macular
degeneration. This new role in their relationship has become a regular
and rewarding part of his life. The past few years have also seen a
dramatic increase in elderly clients seeking help from his law firm.
Witnessing their troubles first-hand, coupled with the aging of his own
parents, Kevin was inspired to leave the law practice to focus more
time on assisting seniors. With Sanford Barrett, Kevin co-founded
Homewatch CareGivers of Utah. Kevin and his wife Janice have four
accomplished children. The family enjoys scuba diving and travel. Kevin
plays the piano and rides his bicycle for exercise and pleasure.
Sanford Barrett and Kevin Whatcott are certified as Senior Advisors by the Society of Certified Senior Advisors. www.society-csa.com
